WhatsApp Business API Opt-In in 2026: What Teams Must Record

Consent is not a checkbox at send time. It is an operational record that protects quality, deliverability, and customer trust.

Consent shield and audit trail protecting WhatsApp business messaging

Recent developer guidance has renewed attention on WhatsApp Business API opt-in. The central point is simple: the API may not stop an unconsented send before it happens, so the business must collect, record, and honor permission as part of its own messaging system.

What opt-in means

A customer should provide their number and affirmatively agree to receive future messages or calls from the business. The collection method can vary, but the business should be able to explain when, where, and why the permission was collected.

Consent is different from simply having a phone number. A contact imported from a spreadsheet is not automatically eligible for a promotional WhatsApp message.

The records a business should keep

At minimum, store the phone number, consent status, collection source, timestamp, purpose or message category, and the latest opt-out status. If consent is collected through a form, retain the relevant form version or wording.

A CRM makes this practical by allowing teams to add consent fields, tags, source information, and suppression rules. The send process should check those fields before a broadcast or automated campaign runs.

Why this affects quality rating

Recipients who do not expect a message may block or report the business. Poor recipient experience can affect quality and future messaging capacity even if the API request succeeds technically.

The safest approach is clear opt-in language, useful messages, reasonable frequency, and an easy opt-out path. Compliance is also a customer-experience practice.

Key takeaways

  • A phone number is not proof of WhatsApp marketing consent.
  • Record source, timestamp, purpose, consent status, and opt-out status.
  • Check suppression and consent fields before broadcasts and automated sends.
